I was invited to comment for the Sunday Times article on foreign dancers. It was especially easy to do so too because Cara and I have spoken on more than one occasion.

The reality is that this topic is no longer of relevance to me since I have retired from the commercial dancing world since I founded SensUal Joy. Still the exact situation that caused me to decide to leave apparently remains till this day. It is very sad.

Unfortunately, Cara was not given enough space to express my full opinion so it might come across as harsh or even discriminating to my fellow Singaporean dancers. Hence I feel impelled to give full disclosure here.

In Singapore, commercial dancers represent majority of dancers here. Ironically, this is also the group that is most neglected. There is no proper form of support structure nor any forms of government aid.

Career is highly volatile. Stability and security is nil. Paymasters are more often than not famous for playing tyrant. Pray tell, who will be able to take this career seriously even if dancing is the love of their life? Hence, my statement that most dancers will have a day job and to commit to a full time dancing commitment to a club will probably be too much for them to handle.

Whatever the case is, I do not see foreign talents coming to our shore as a bad thing. It can inspire local dancers to keep on improving themselves and at the same time we can learn a thing or two from foreign talents without even leaving our shores. It’s great isn’t it?
