About Action for AIDS
Action for AIDS, Singapore (AfA) was formed in 1988 in response to the development of AIDS and the
first report of a case in Singapore in 1986. It is a registered charity whose various support, welfare and
educational programmes are managed largely by volunteers and largely funded through donations.
The organization focuses on its AIDS commitment through the constant promotion of prevention
education, advocating and providing care and welfare of people living with HIV/AIDS.
To target vulnerable populations on top of the general community, it works alongside the government in
designing and implementing prevention, education and outreach programmes.
AfA operates an Anonymous HIV-testing facility in the Singapore, manages the AfA Medication
Assistance Programme and Pregnant Mothers Fund and co-ordinates several support groups to assist
infected persons who are hospitalised or at home, and their families. Its educational activities include
public talks and exhibitions, the development of educational materials, behavioral research and

Undulation or body ripple is one of the most sensuous techniques used in exotic dancing.  It is hypnotizing and it gives the illusion of being snake-like.  This technique employs the successive movements of the chest-abdomen-hip, although you may also incorporate the head in which case it will be head-chest-abdomen-hip sequence.

• Keeping your legs close together, stand straight with your right foot pivoted.

First scoop your head forward followed by your chest, abdomen and lastly hip.

Now reverse it by tucking in your pelvis, pushing out your abdomen, chest and finally your head.

TIP: Since it is literally impossible to “reverse scoop” your head, all you need to do after pushing your chest out is to look up or tip your chin upwards.  Alternatively you can make do without the head at all.

• Now varied it with speed and size.

Make slow but pronounced body wave and subsequently with the increment of tempo, make smaller waves.  It is recommended to omit the head when doing a fast body wave.  Repeat on the other side.

• Try another challenging technique which I call the side body wave.  Stand with your legs shoulder width apart.

Use your head to draw a semi circle from left to right, then push your chest forward followed by abdomen, push your hip out and sit.

At this point your left leg will pivot while your weight will be on the right leg.

Reverse the wave by tucking in your pelvis followed by the abdomen, chest and swing your head from right to left and without breaking the motion, continue with the sequence on the other side.

• There is an alternative technique if you don’t want to incorporate the head for the side body wave.

This technique requires you to roll your right shoulder inwards then push your chest out followed by abdomen, push your hip out and sit.

As explained above, at this point your left leg will pivot while your weight will be on the right leg.

Then reverse by tucking in your pelvis followed by the abdomen, chest and roll your left shoulder inwards and without breaking the motion, continue with the sequence on the other side.

Social relations is an intrinsic component of living.  One cannot be without the other. This also resonates with regards to the relationship between body and emotions.  The manifestation of one’s sentiment can tangibly be expressed through one’s body language.  For example, in anger, you will frown, clench your teeth or fist and the entire body tenses up.  In anxiety, you will bite your lower lip and your body will tremble.  In the perspective of exotic dancing, this paralanguage is an important means of conveying the dancer’s intent and emotion to the audience.

Exotic dancing is an art which entails the following three factors, namely:

• the theory/philosophy behind it,
• the actual hands on aspect, and
• the heart of the performer/practitioner,

without which no art form can come to life.  Hence in order to performer, an exotic dancer must be capable of bringing herself to her sacred space where sensuality overflows.

As for me, I will conjure up a scenario where I am dancing for my significant other in a seductive setting and thus invoking the sensual siren within.  Vivid imagery of the kind of attire I will adorn on aids greatly in bringing about the sensuality. It should correspond accordingly with the type of dance I will be performing such as lap dancing, strip dancing or pole dancing.  Once the mood sets in, it’s showtime baby!

Personally for me, the most sensuous technique apart from body ripple is any kind of hip work.  The chief reason being, the hip is, in general, one of the most alluring asset that forms the female form.  Therefore hip movements or gyrating motions are guaranteed attention-grabbing winners where you will catch him gasped in breathless awe.

Techniques that utilizes this principle includes drawing of circles and drawing the figure eight with your hip, lifting and dropping of your hip, sliding from side to side and thrusting motion..

Use your creativity and imagination!

Body ripple or body undulation is equally hypnotizing.  It gives the illusion of being snake-like.  This technique employs the successive movements of the chest-abdomen-hip, although some may also incorporate the head.

The wonder of such techniques are multi-faceted. If Mother Nature has endowed you with generous bosom and hips, these techniques maximizes in showing off its full glory to the audience. If you have less ample bosom and hips, these techniques will also compensate for your lack and when you do movements as such, it is impossible not for the body/emotions connection to be activated, leaving you feeling all feminine and oh-so-sexy.

Chest circle or chest rotation is one of the techniques commonly employed in many forms of exotic dancing. Mainly, it involves circular motions isolating the chest from the rest of the body to produce beautiful and fluid movements.

• Stand in front of and as close as possible to the mirror.  Slide your chest to the right by moving your rib cage in that direction and then push it forward, to the left and back to the centre to make a nice front half circle. Repeat it on the other side, sliding your left rib cage to the left, then pushing it forward, to the right and back to the centre.

TIP: Your chest should be brush past the mirror when you push the chest forward.  While doing this, be conscious of drawing a circle parallel to the floor. When doing these rotations, your shoulders will move naturally but avoid from deliberately using them to guide you as this is supposed to be an isolation work of the chest.

• Now varied it with speed and size. Try making full circles. Make slow big chest circles and subsequently with the increment of tempo, smaller circles. Repeat the other side.

• Another technique is upward chest circle. Now in place of pushing your chest forward, bring it up instead i.e. slide your chest to the right, bring it up, down to the left and back to the centre. Bear in mind that your chest should not be touching the mirror because this times you’re drawing a circle perpendicular to the floor.

• Make slow big upward chest circles and subsequently with the increment of tempo, smaller circles. Repeat the other side.

• Applying the upward chest circle technique, you can also do a diagonal or “lop-sided” chest circle. Unlike the previous upward chest circle where both breasts move together at the same time, in this case only one breast will move at a time followed by the other.  First raise only your right breast; notice that one breast is up and the other down in a lop-sided position? Then raise your left breast and this time your right breast should go down.  Remember that at any one time when one breast goes up, the other will go down.

• Make slow big diagonal chest circles and subsequently with the increment of tempo, smaller circles. Repeat the other side.

Being completely caught up with the demands of daily life, I have forgotten what it means to be a woman. It wasn’t until I chance upon SensUal Joy that I realised that for myself. When I first participated in its programs, I came thinking that it was just a dance class that I want to have fun in. However, very quickly I realised the structure of the program and the contents have been designed to contain truths about daily living that can empower me as a woman. Its effects acted quick upon me after only a lesson. I sense a peculiar but welcoming change in how I felt about myself as a woman.

In SensUal Joy, I learn to be a woman first before all else. I learn how important it is to first recognize my inherent gifts as a woman and how it can aid in playing other roles in my life. Love Program has tapped on a hidden dormant I didn’t know I had, waiting to be awakened. Besides heightening my confidence, I have learnt to love my own physical body, every delicious inch of it! An empowered woman takes charge and believes in what she believes in as well as what makes her feel good.  And oh boy, do I feel good.  No, I feel FANTASTIC!!

I’m still making the journey towards being more and more empowered and hope to spread that empowerment to fellow ladies who were once like me.
